It has come to our attention that many homes in Sydney have received a letter in the mail offering the chance to participate in a subsidised battery trial called ‘closed group – testing phase’.
The offer states that a solar installer will provide a ‘substantial contribution’ towards the product and installation in return for feedback, data and potential access to the product over a 12 month period. We have seen offers for the Enphase AC battery, and the Alpha ESS battery.
So should you sign up for the trial?
After looking into the deal, we have found the battery is being sold at a substantially inflated price. In the case of the Enphase ‘subsidised trial’, the price for 1 battery was roughly the same price that we charge for 2 batteries, fully installed with full system monitoring and support.
Unfortunately, when a solar company does not sign up to the Clean Energy Council’s Code of Conduct, there is little that can be done to protect consumers from unethical business practices such as inflating prices and misleading marketing practices.
This is why it is so important to deal with a company that is an Approved Solar Retailer by the Clean Energy Council.
Finding a Reliable Solar Installer
Solar companies such as Solaray are able to apply to become a Clean Energy Council Approved Retailer by signing up to the CEC Code of Conduct. The application process involves providing documentation of sales contracts, terms and conditions, examples of advertising, internal policies etc. to clearly show that the business practices of the company adhere to the Code of Conduct.
Once a company is awarded a stamp of approval from the CEC, it must strictly adhere to the Code of Conduct.
There are currently less than 100 CEC Approved installers in NSW out of thousands of solar installers, as the standards are very high and there is a lot of work that goes into adhering to these standards.
The Code of Conduct is 42 pages long and covers pre-sales, post-sales, documentation and general business practices. To achieve its objectives, the Code addresses four broad subject areas:
- Pre-Sale activities
- Post-Sale activities
- General business
