Tesla Powerwall is a smart home battery system that integrates with your existing solar system and can provide backup power for when the grid goes down.

In Australia, solar batteries have completely revolutionised the way households use, store and manage their power, now making it possible to run your household on solar power 24 hours a day.

The Tesla Powerwall has 13.5kWh of storage capacity, includes an integrated battery inverter-charger, performs better in a range of temperatures and is easily managed through the Tesla App.

Tesla Powerwall enables solar households to further reduce their power bill and maximise solar self-consumption. In fact, with a capacity of 13.5 kWh, a typical family home will be able to run all evening on stored solar power.

What Is The Benefit Of Installing Solar Batteries?

Tesla Powerwall Review

The Tesla Powerwall Home Battery was introduced to Australia back in 2017 and has been increasingly popular as the solar battery of choice in Australia. It has a storage capacity of 13.5 kWh which can power your home overnight until it is recharged by the sun again.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 also has a 5kW continuous output with a peak of 7kW, which is double the amount from the previous model. But what does that mean for your household? The increased output and capacity means that it can keep your household powered for longer, which results in lower energy bills from the grid.

With a rated operated temperature range of –20 to 50 degrees, the Tesla Powerwall 2 operates more efficiently within a broad range of temperatures. This is thanks to its unique liquid cooling system which makes it superior to other battery systems in the market.

The Tesla Powerwall Home Battery offers three energy consumption modes: Back-Up Only, Self-Powered, and Time-Based Control.

  • Back-Up Only: Aims to keep the battery full so in the event of a power outage you have maximised protection with continuous power in a blackout.
  • Self-Powered: The most common purpose and mode to having solar power, this aims use as much solar energy generated from your panels thereby reducing your carbon footprint and electricity bills.
  • Time-Based Control: Aims to reduce your costs by allowing you to charge and discharge at certain times of the day depending on the peak and off-peak energy rates.

Monitor and Manage Energy Consumption With the Tesla Mobile App

Tesla has developed an app that is considered to be one of the best and most innovative energy management software systems, known simply as the Tesla Mobile App. Supported on both Apple iOS and Android, the Tesla app allows users to monitor real-time home energy consumption, solar system monitoring and Powerwall Battery energy management.

For Tesla electric vehicle drivers, this utilises the energy component of the same app that is used to monitor their car and gives an added level of control when charging vehicles from the solar or Powerwall.

How Solar Storage Reduces Your Power Bills

The feed-in tariff for selling excess solar power back to the grid is very low in many states of Australia. In Australia, we typically get a credit on our power bill of between around 5 and 12 cents a kWh. By storing this excess solar power in batteries, we can use it during the peak billing period where prices can be over 50 cents a kWh. This is known as maximising self-consumption of solar power and is a great way to reduce your power bill. Many Solaray customers are now running their home almost entirely on solar power!

Energy prices continue to rise

Even if you get a discount from your energy retailer, power prices in Australia are amounts the highest in the developed world, in some cases more than double the price for energy compared to nations such as Sweden and Finland. Nationally, prices are up more than 120% over the last 10 years, and this trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. By installing solar with battery storage you can lock in your power prices for decades by generating most of your own power using solar.

Australia is still mainly powered by coal & gas

Australian households are leading the world with our uptake of residential solar power with millions of solar systems installed. Even so, there is still a lot of work to do. Most of the power generated in Australia still comes from coal, and there is reluctance in Canberra to transition to renewables. The biggest vote we have as consumers is to lead the way by installing solar power with backup storage. It’s by far the biggest single action we can take to reduce our carbon footprint. By installing a 10kW system, we take around $100,000 off the books of the coal industry and directly invest in growing the renewables industry.

Solar storage systems include revolutionary energy management technology that automatically directs solar power into your home or to recharge your batteries. Online consumption monitoring allows you to monitor how much power you are using in the home as well as how much solar power your system is generating.

Exciting home automation is on the way, which will allow you to send excess solar power into appliances such as automatically turning on the pool pumps, air conditioner or underfloor heating. All of this will be able to be controlled from a mobile phone, allowing you to take back control of your power consumption.

EV charging is around the corner. Installing a solar power system will allow you to charge your electric car from excess solar power, and it may even allow you to charge your home batteries from excess capacity in the car’s battery.

The power grid is struggling to generate enough capacity on hot days, causing highly-publicised and disruptive blackouts in SA and around Australia. By installing solar storage, you can continue to run essential appliances in a blackout such as your freezer, the internet and perhaps a few lights.
